The word clock is derived from the Latin "glocke", meaning bell. In medieval times townspeople only had the bell's toll for timekeeping, because only the wealthy and royalty owned mechanical clocks or watches. The small gilt bronze handmade table clocks depicted in paintings of the 13th century were not very accurate... until the pendulum was first employed in clocks of the late 17th century. Most clocks were custom made until about the year 1810. In the classic period following World War II, clocks were mass manufactured and stylish timepieces found their way into middle class homes. Styles changed rapidly to meet developing trends and tastes.
In today's digital world, clocks are ubiquitous, and yet remain as indispensible as ever. Collectible clocks, whether vintage, classic or contemporary make a design statement that graces the wall like art. There is a clock for every style and period. Clocks make extraordinary gifts, something special that is looked at every day. You can find a unique range of collectible clocks at Something Special. Why not take some time and browse a bit?
