Siddhārtha Gautama (Buddha) was a spiritual teacher from the Indian subcontinent, on whose teachings Buddhism was founded. In most Buddhist traditions, he is regarded as the Supreme Buddha of our age. The word "Buddha" means "awakened one" or "the enlightened one." According to archeological findings and inscriptions, Buddha was born in Lumbini in modern Nepal. He spread his teaching throughout Eastern India, from where it spread throughout Asia.
